Why a printed tracker works

A habit tracker works because the record is visible and the gap is obvious. Filling a box takes a moment; seeing a run of filled boxes is what makes you reluctant to break it. Doing that on paper, on a wall or inside a notebook, beats an app for the same reason a wall calendar does — it is in front of you without being opened.

Thirty-one columns covers any month. Seven covers a week at a glance, and fifty-two turns the sheet into a year, one column per week.

Setting it up

The name column holds the habit; make it wide enough for the way you actually write.

  • Monthly habit tracking — thirty-one columns, a row per habit.
  • Bullet journal spreads — print it and paste it in rather than ruling it.
  • Chore charts — a row per person or per job.
  • Practice logs — instrument practice, exercise, revision.
  • Medication and symptom records — a dated grid a clinician can read.

Every sheet here is free, adjustable and prints at exact scale.

Questions

How many columns do I need?

Thirty-one for a calendar month, seven for a week, or fifty-two to track something once a week for a year. The columns are numbered from one, so they suit any of those.

Will it fit in my notebook?

Set a custom page size to your notebook's page, or print on A5 — the grid fits whatever sheet you give it, and the columns divide the space evenly.

Can I use it for a whole year?

Yes. Use fifty-two columns for one mark a week, or print twelve monthly sheets. Thirty-one columns across a landscape sheet leaves the most room to write in each box.
