Written in rows of ten, the numbers to 100 line up by place value: every number in a column ends in the same digit, and each row down adds ten. One square right is one more; one square down is ten more. That is the whole of place value, laid out where a child can see it.
Set the last number to 120 for the chart first grade counts to, or to 50 or 20 for younger children. Make the first number larger than the last and the chart counts down instead. The squares stay square and never grow past 18 mm, so a short chart does not turn into a page of giant boxes.
