At an inch across, the squares stop being a grid you plot on and become boxes you work in. Seven columns by ten rows on a Letter sheet is a calendar, a game board, a set of letter-formation boxes, or a storyboard.
It is also the first grid many children meet, because a large square forgives poor motor control. A digit written in a one inch box can be badly formed and still be clearly in the right place.
