A number line turns arithmetic into movement. Adding is stepping right, subtracting is stepping left, and the size of a number becomes a distance you can see rather than a symbol you have to remember.
It keeps working long past early arithmetic: negative numbers as positions left of zero, fractions as points between whole numbers, and rounding as "which tick is nearer" all sit naturally on the same picture.

Yes. Set the start value below zero — -10 to 10 is the usual range for introducing negatives, and zero lands in the middle of the line.
