Quad ruled is simply four squares to the inch — which is why the same sheet is sold as 4x4 graph paper and as 1/4 inch graph paper. It is the default American classroom grid in the same way 5 mm is the default European one, and at 6.35 mm the squares are noticeably more generous.
The size suits handwriting well. A digit fits inside one square without cramping, which is why quad paper gets used as much for arithmetic and note-taking as for plotting. Thirty squares across by forty down fit inside the margin of a Letter sheet.
