How to print Letter Tracing Sheets

Tracing before copying

Learning to write has two separate problems in it: knowing what shape the letter is, and getting your hand to make it. Tracing removes the first so the child can practise the second, which is why it comes before copying from a model.

The three styles here are a progression, not a preference. Dotted gives the most support. Solid outline gives the shape but makes the child hold the line. Pale tint is nearly independent writing with a safety net.

Setting the letters

The letters field takes anything you type, so a sheet can be a whole alphabet, one troublesome letter, or a child's own name repeated down the page.

  • Alphabet practice — enter Aa Bb Cc and work through the set.
  • One letter at a time — a full page of the letter that is not sticking.
  • Name practice — the first thing most children want to write.
  • Number formation — digits get reversed as often as letters do.
  • Second-language scripts — any characters your keyboard can produce.

Questions

Can I put my own words on the sheet?

Yes. Whatever you type in the letters field is repeated across each row, so a name, a spelling list or a single letter all work.

Which letter style should I start with?

Dotted, then solid outline, then pale tint. Each step gives a little less help, and the last one is close to writing unaided.

Does it print in a joined or print handwriting style?

The guide letters use the printer's built-in typeface, so they are unjoined print letters. For cursive practice use the calligraphy or oblique ruling and write the model yourself.
