When each square is exactly one centimetre, the paper becomes a measuring instrument. Count the squares and you have the length; count them in both directions and you have the area, in square centimetres, without a calculation.
That is why it dominates elementary maths, including in American schools that teach metric measurement on Letter paper. Area, perimeter, coordinates and simple scale drawing all become counting exercises rather than arithmetic ones — provided the print is at true scale.
