Rows, packing and overlap

In rows, the circles sit on a square lattice and leave a gap at every corner — the layout for polka dots, button charts and coin holders. Packed honeycomb, each row steps half a space and the circles nest, which is the densest arrangement there is and the one flowers, foam and stacked pipes all arrive at.

Size is set as a percentage of the spacing. At 100% neighbouring circles just touch; above that they overlap and start drawing the vesica shapes that Gothic tracery and Islamic pattern are built from. Add spokes and each circle becomes a small protractor to divide by eye.

Questions

How do I draw the flower of life?

Choose honeycomb packing and set the circle size to 200%, so each circle passes through its neighbours' centres. That is the construction exactly.

What does the size percentage mean?

It is the circle diameter as a percentage of the spacing. At 100% neighbours touch, below that they are separate, above that they overlap.

What are the spokes for?

They divide each circle into eight, which is enough to find halves, quarters and diagonals by eye — useful when you are drawing a repeating motif inside every circle.
