At half an inch you get 15 squares across a Letter sheet inside the margin. That is far too coarse to plot data on, and exactly right when the grid has to be legible from the back of a classroom or across a workbench.
It is also the size at which a square becomes a usable unit of measurement in itself. Two squares to the inch means counting squares is counting half-inches, with no ruler needed.
