Players take turns drawing one line between two neighbouring dots, across or down. Whoever draws the fourth side of a box writes their initial in it and must draw another line. When every box is closed, the player with the most boxes wins.
A full sheet makes a long game. For a quicker one, draw a border around a smaller patch — five by five boxes is a good length for young players — and play inside it.

Two is classic, but three or four work — each player writes a different initial in their boxes or uses a different colour.
So the board is easy to see and to play with a pencil or a crayon. The dot size and spacing are both adjustable if you want a denser board.
Avoid drawing the third side of a box, since that hands it to your opponent. Late in the game it pays to give away a short chain of boxes to keep control of a longer one.
