Standard manuscript paper fits ten or twelve staves to a page with about 2 mm between the lines. That is fine for a practised hand and hard for a beginner: a note head has to sit exactly in a space or on a line, and small spaces make every note ambiguous.
At 3.5 mm a pencilled note head sits clearly in its space, so a teacher can read it and a child can see their own mistakes. Big staves are also easier to read on a music stand for anyone with low vision.
