American house plans are drawn at 1/4 inch to the foot, which on this paper is one square per foot. A 12 by 14 foot bedroom is 12 squares by 14; a 3 foot doorway is three squares. No scale rule and no arithmetic — count squares and you have the dimension.
Landscape suits plans because most rooms and houses are wider than they are deep. A 40 by 28 foot grid holds one floor of a small house or a whole apartment; for anything bigger, print on 11 × 17 or let each square stand for two feet.

1/4 inch = 1 foot is the standard for house plans and fits most homes on one sheet. For a single room with furniture, use 1/2 inch = 1 foot by setting the square size to 1/2 inch.
40 by 28 feet on Letter at one square per foot. Switch the paper to Tabloid (11 × 17) and it grows to 64 by 38.
Divide each dimension in inches by 12 to get squares. A queen bed, 60 by 80 inches, is 5 squares by 6⅔; a 36 inch doorway is three squares.
