Sprites and tiles come in powers of two: 8 × 8, 16 × 16, 32 × 32. A bold line every eighth square marks those boundaries for you, so you can plan a whole tileset on one sheet and see at a glance where one tile ends and the next begins.
The grid is pale on purpose. Pixel art is drawn by filling squares, often with markers or coloured pencils, and a dark grid would fight the colours. Light grey stays readable while you work and all but disappears once the squares are filled.
