Blue is the standard grid colour in European and Asian exercise books, and the reason is the same as for green in engineering pads: it is visually distinct from graphite and from the blue-black ink of a fountain pen, so the grid recedes.
A mid blue at a light weight is the version most people find comfortable. Push the weight down towards 0.1 mm and it becomes almost invisible in a photocopy.
