Numbering the grid turns "the square about halfway down, a bit to the left" into "D14". That is what makes it useful for mystery picture worksheets, Battleship-style games, seating plans and any pattern someone else has to copy square by square.
Switch the side labels to letters if your instructions read the other way round, with numbers across the top. For a grid with both axes numbered from zero, use a coordinate grid instead.
