Ruled lines control height and nothing else. A grid controls width too, which is why it is the standard for anything written in columns: long multiplication, algebraic working, kanji practice, and any language where character spacing matters.
The trick is keeping the grid quiet. At 8 mm with a pale line, it guides the writing without the finished page looking like a spreadsheet — which is why the default here is a light grey rather than the usual blue.
